The course is suitable for learners working in roles that support pupil’s learning including teaching assistants, learning support assistants and special needs assistants.

Two types of learning outcomes: Skills that can be performed and knowledge that can be learnt. Units cover children and young people’s development, the requirements of safeguarding and the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion. You will study these units as well as other optional units:

  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Schools as organisations
  • Support learning activities
  • Promote children and young people's positive behaviour
  • Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
  • Support assessment for learning
  • Understand child and young person development
  • Understand how to safeguard the well-being of children and young people
  • Support children and your people's health and safety
  • Engage in personal development in health, social care or children's and young people's settings.

How is the course taught?

You will be taught using a range of teaching tools and techniques including lectures, role play activities, scenarios, group and pair work, assignments, presentations and work experience in the sector. As part of your course, you will have to attend a work placement: Days as placement Primary School: Mon-Wed 9.00-15.00. College day: Thu 9.00-17.00 (incl. 30 min lunch break and 15 min tea break).
