Course content

The course is composed of 11 individually assessed units. These units are studied throughout the year in a way that allows you to grow your qualification. The topics covered in this qualification are:

  • The Study of Living Organisms
  • Skills and Techniques of Chemistry Investigation
  • The Nature and Applications of Energy (Award Obtained)
  • Making Useful scientific Investigations
  • Healthy Living
  • Starting Work in the Science Sector (Certificate Obtained)
  • Forensic Detection
  • Growing Plants for Commercial Use
  • Using Equipment
  • Science in World

You will also work towards improving your English and Maths skills through a GCSE or Functional Skills.

What have students who have taken this course in the past progressed to?

This is a full time Level 1 Applied Science qualification. It provides a good foundation in science and a progression route into the Applied Science or any other Science related course at Level 2 such as Engineering, Health and Social Care or Sport. However, in order to be recommended to go onto these courses you must show your teacher that you are up to Level 2 work by submitting high quality assignments by the deadline.

How will I learn?

You will be taught in a variety of ways including lectures, practical work, group and pair work as well as self-directed study.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will be by assignments, presentations, observation of practical work and practical lab written reports. Each unit studied will use one or more of these assessment methods.

Equipment and other costs

You will be expected to provide your own file to keep your assignments and stationary but other materials will be provided. 

Is there additional work required by the student?

In addition to the time spent in classes in College, you will be expected to spend several hours per week on self-directed study.
